Why WhatsApp Photos Are Missing From a PDF Export

By ChatToPaper · How we review guides

Fix missing WhatsApp photos in a PDF: check the original export, filenames, Include photos setting, and missing or unsupported attachment warnings.

Short answer

A PDF converter can only include images that exist in the export and match a referenced filename. Re-export with media if the ZIP or selected files do not contain the photo.

Find where the photo went missing

What you seeWhat to checkNext step
Media omitted in the transcriptThe source records media but may not contain a filename or fileRe-export with media and inspect the saved files
Image filename, but no matching fileThe photo was not selected or is absent from the ZIPSelect the TXT and its photos together
Duplicate filenamesDifferent files share the same attachment nameUse the original export of one chat; avoid combining folders
Photos imported but not shownInclude photos may be off, or the message falls outside the date rangeCheck Customize PDF and the selected dates
Unsupported attachmentThe reference may be audio, video, or an unreadable imageKeep the original file separately; review the placeholder

Preserve the connection between text and pictures

A photo is placed using an attachment reference in the transcript, not its position in a folder. Renaming images or mixing photos from different exports can break that connection. Start again with the untouched ZIP when possible.

For example, if a message references IMG-20261020-WA0001.jpg, the corresponding image must be available in the imported files. A similarly dated photo with a different filename is not a reliable substitute.

Verify the repair

  1. Inspect the source archive and confirm the expected image file exists.
  2. Import the original ZIP, or the TXT and accompanying photos together.
  3. Check the matched and missing-photo warnings.
  4. Find the affected message in the preview and confirm the correct image is in context.
  5. Create a fresh PDF after fixing the source or settings; an older downloaded PDF will not update itself.

ChatToPaper cannot recover a deleted photo or infer the contents of an omitted attachment. See printing chats with photos for the complete workflow.

Questions and answers

Why keep a placeholder instead of removing the missing photo?

A placeholder makes the missing context visible and preserves the attachment’s position. Silently dropping it could make the conversation misleading.

Can a converter restore photos from “media omitted”?

No. That text alone does not contain the image. You need an export or separately selected source file that contains the actual photo and can be matched to the message.
